January 2016: Slip-sliding Away,....

Almost last day of January,
and this month has slip-slided away from us.

Kindergarten is exhausting even if you are six years old,
but a lot of Isaac's sleep issues have resolved,
Praise the LORD,
we are so grateful,'s been a long haul,
and Isaac is still not the best sleeper in the world, but his advances
in bedtime and ability to STAY asleep are incredible,...

A nap after school never hurts,...especially under such gorgeous winter skies,...

Perhaps Isaac is dreaming of his birthday,...
THIS is the SIXTH cake,...Isaac has re-decorated, but NOT eaten.
But perhaps, Isaac knows that birthday cake is not really that nutritious,
and why bother,...when you are STUFFED with donuts!!!

Check out Mr. Donut-face,...sugar encrusted,...but you gotta celebrate b'days,
one way,...or the other,...

And of course with Isaac's it is always the OTHER way,...

But who cares,...I don't think I've ever met another individual
who enjoys LIFE as much as Isaac does,
you can see the wonder and excitement in his eyes and expression.

Curiosity and concern too as he supervises the candle lighting process.

The shouts of JOY are just to make sure EVERYONE is getting in on the happiness.

And then fun with physics,
light the candles,
blow them out,
light the candles,
blow them out,
and gee,....but they go out,...every single time.
"...fascinating,"- (Mr. Spock-voice)

And at the end, when you have nothing but candle nubs,
enjoy the flames, a campfire,
and contemplate the universe,
or the next activity,
"What shall I do?"
to Isaac the world is wide-open,
to be explored,...

In January, is on and then off,....on and then off,
with holidays and half days and snow days,
or rather a snow day that wasn't for us,
we just got some pretty flurries,
and the snow is NEVER the concern for us in the Deep South,
it's the ice, folks,
slip-sliding on the roadways is NOT our forte,
and in our area the roadways are hilly,
not something a novice needs to tackle,
so snuggling at home with plenty of milk and bread,
for french toast, of course,
is fine with us!!!!

Yet, needless to say the breaks in routine are difficult
for a little guy, who needs routine and structure at school,
so school days for Isaac in January have kinda been like a novice driving on ice,
slipping and sliding to get to the end of each day,
but outta school,
Isaac's VERY busy exploring,
and interacting,
as he has every script to every film and cartoon,
and not just the words, but the inflections,
and PERFECT timing,
and he always shares the FUN,
so for us,
television is not passive,
oh no,'s get up and experience the experience,
be it under the sea, a frozen world, outer space with Buz and penguins,
or inner space with core memories,
and that's pretty wonderful,
but that's our I.I,
a very unique little guy!

Until I post again,...may God bless and keep you!

Six Years and Counting,...

Six years ago my husband and I had two grown sons: Teddy was twenty-one, Michael was eighteen, and I was forty-four years old. Understandably my husband and I didn't think we could ever have more children, because HELLO, we hadn't had any for eighteen years, but then a miracle occurred, I became pregnant, and Isaac arrived January 2010 to ROCK our world!!!!

Happy Birthday Isaac,...even though the new car is Teddy's.
When your big brother is twenty-seven the odds are in favor of him having a cool ride.
I am sure Isaac's booster seat in the backseat of the coupe will be a standout.

Last days of five years old,...check out the stoic game-face,....

Another face,...very determined,...among a myriad of legos.

Hmmmm,...which should I choose,...says Isaac's expression,
and he is blessed to have a very expressive face,
it helps a lot when Apraxia makes communication difficult.
But Isaac is making STRIDES,
his vocabulary is off the charts,
he can repeat ANYTHING,
not perfectly perhaps,
but he can SAY IT!!!!
And it's all in that little busy little mind.
The words are probably like these mixed up legos on the table.
All there, but Isaac has to painstakingly hunt each word,
and make it fit,
into what he wants to convey.
For most people, words and language, are so instantaneous we don't give it a second thought.
But Isaac has to not only give it thought, but purpose,
to make his message known.

These days autism is more obvious,
to others,
but Isaac doesn't care,
he doesn't judge you,
and if you judge him,
guess what?
Isaac doesn't care,
he knows he's AWESOME,
and he's generous enough,
to think
are AWESOME too.
And somehow it's very hard to call that a disability.

Six years ago, we didn't know about Apraxia and Autism,
we never thought they would impact our child or our lives.
Birthdays are hard,
no sugar coating this fact,
Isaac doesn't 'get' birthdays,
not in the tradition sense,
and having raised two boys,
with all the anticipation and giggles and wondering
it's hard to wrap your mind around Isaac's indifference.

That's when Mama steps back,
and considers the here and now,
Because to Isaac life's a gift,
and every single day
the world's his oyster.

Birthday celebrations won't be typical.
Not like days of old,
but it's a new day,
and a new world,
with a new child.
So we know that,
Isaac will gleefully decorate a birthday cake,
but it won't eat it.
He'll be curious about the birthday gifts,
but not 'get' it's a super special gift just for him.
When he's ready,
Isaac will play with the new toys,
and even like them a lot,
but in his time,
because it's all very overwhelming,
for a sensitive little soul,
and we respect that.

Isaac experiences the world in a different way,
including birthdays,
and he makes sure YOU do too.

We're just happy you were born Isaac.
We love you.
and we know you love us too.
Hugs and kisses,
and sunshine smiles,
GREAT ideas,
and giggles,
and fun.

Oh dear, but the slumped shoulders say it all,
"Do I gotta do b'day stuff so early in the morning (7:30 a.m.)"
Six years and counting,
and it is abundantly clear Isaac is not, but NOT
a morning person.

But Isaac is generous,
and patient with Mama and her pixs for prosperity.
The thumbs up is only because he's such a nice guy.
And we've wised up in the past six years,
no cupcakes for I.I.
Birthday donuts are his treat of choice.
And that's pretty cool,
'cause he gets birthday cake, AND donuts.
The cake is a photo prop,
and toy,
let's blow out candles and redecorate the decorations,
while the donuts are for serious consumption,
because you don't turn SIX YEARS old just every day.

Our Isaac,...maturity is written into his features,
rapidly losing the babyish roundness,
he's a little boy,
with lots of challenges,
challenges that daunt us,
but not him.

Isaac's got this life business down pat,
after all he's been doing it for six years now,
and having a BLAST!!!

Until I post again,...may God bless and keep you!

Swinging Into The New Year

Eight days in and Isaac's got a handle on 2016,
and what's not to love?
Still on Christmas break (3 weeks this year!!!), getting to go to the park on
a beautiful afternoon,...nice temps, sunshine, big brother near by,
and Mama on the other side of the camera.

Actually the swinging activity took place at the end of our visit,
as Isaac was too busy making friends with a little boy (about two years old)
who thought "That Boy" - i.e. Isaac was the coolest thing in the world,
because he was so good at playing chase.

It was very interesting to have Isaac as the "Big Kid" at the park,
and needless to say he performed his new role,...flawlessly.

In his own matchless style,...of course,
but Isaac had one or two surprises for us,
and his little friend.

For starters,...Isaac made a point of keeping to the easy play ground equipment,
so his little friend could keep up,...

And then, at one point, Isaac's little friend was scared even on the easy slide,
and piped, "HELP!"
"I, Help!" Isaac cried, lending a helping hand to get his little friend down safely,
while Teddy and I were both going, "AWWWW how sweet,"
and then doing backflips,
because THAT was a lot of good socialization,
with a heaping side-dish of compassion.

Of course for Isaac the good deed was par for the course:
others help him,
he helps others.
THE best lesson to learn at the start of 2016!!!

Check out, Isaac checking out the swing to find out EXACTLY how it works.

EXACTLY how Isaac works is still a mystery.
This morning Apraxia was giving him a hard time as he tried to tell me something.
It was like a stereo without a speaker, everything was working, but nothing was coming out.
But Isaac's NEVER fazed, he merely grabbed my hand and pulled me into the hallway,
and pantomimed exercise,
because YESTERDAY we exercised together,
and trust me, Isaac is one tough little personal trainer.
This morning, I exercised while Isaac was sleeping in, but obviously
he thought I was slacking off my New Year's resolution to get in shape,
and wanted Mama to give him: TWENTY!!!
No joke, yesterday I was counting to 10 with sit-ups
but when I reached 10 and was about to stop,...Isaac prompted, "11, 12,..."
Oh dear,...Mama did twenty,...with Isaac's help, I'll be back in shape in no time!!!

Eight days down,
the rest of 2016 to go,
Buckle Up,'s going to be a GREAT year!

Until I post again,...may God bless and keep you!

Oh, It's 2016

I'll give you three guess to what was Isaac's favorite Christmas present,...

Dinosaur Pajamas for EVERYONE,...would be Isaac's decree for 2016,...

Seriously,...our little guy is in LOVE with these Pajamas,...
to the point the first time they had to go into the washing machine,...
Isaac was climbing after them.
Oh dear, was a sad, sad afternoon,...for about fifteen minutes,
and then thankfully our little guy got busy being happy,
which he does much better than being a sad, little dinosaur,
and YES, we've already check to see if we could get
another pair of pajamas,
but no luck,
but that's ok,...we'll just wash and wear this beloved pair.

Three week Christmas break from school for Isaac means
we're having lots of fun this New year,....
mostly hanging at home,
which is nice after the business of Christmas and the New Year,

New Year's Eve Isaac enjoyed shooting off rockets with his Big Bro's,
lots of oooooohs and aaaaah, but it was too dark for photo ops.
Also too dark for Isaac to notice that the winter storms
brought down some big branches.

But this afternoon is cold, but bright and beautiful,
and Isaac noticed those downed branches.

"Oh no," says Isaac, "It broken," and then looks up at Mama full of confidence, "We fix it."
"Can't buddy," Mama has to report, "It's broken for good."
"Leaves fall down," says Isaac undeterred, "Put back."
Oh dear, I would have went into a long spill about the seasons,
and why leaves fall and are re-grown in spring,
but thankfully Isaac spied a baseball bat,
and we knocked around some pinecones,
in a very chummy manner,
which is GREAT!!!!

So grateful for all the progress Isaac is making.
Was our quasi-conversation typical?
No, but it more than our little guy was able to do last January.

While Isaac played, I took a couple laps around the yard,
Mama's got a gimpy knee she's trying to strengthen,
and Isaac was super-sweet to come (unasked)
and hold my hand for a few laps,
and we chatted more about those pesky leaves,
that SHOULD be on trees,
like the evergreen pine trees,
which Isaac kept pointing out,
as if to sink my argument the leaves couldn't be on the trees in winter.
"Tree green," says Isaac,
and I know I am out of my league here,
Isaac could think of something fun to do with all those
leaves since we couldn't put them back on the trees.

Perfect photo opp,...

Shall we discuss gravity,...Isaac?
What goes up, must come down.

Just like little minds open to great big concepts.

Exploring the world with Isaac,
I think that's going to be our theme for 2016.

Until I post again,...may God bless and keep you!
